Student Work

Hometown Hero

Students identify the traits of positive and diverse role models who may be identified as heroes/heroines, and draw a portrait of that hero.

Impressionist Landscape

Students use acrylic paint, long handle brushes and stand up easels to focus on the impact of light, color and depth to create their composition.

Student Voice - I chose my mother as my hometown hero because she made me the person I am today. My mother recently passed away in May and I saw this project as a way of spending time with her.

Student Voice - The most rewarding part was seeing the piece come together. At first, I had little confidence that my piece would turn out well. As the process went along and more strokes were added, however, I saw the piece form right in front of my eyes, looking the way that I desired it to.

Natural Pattern

Students create a metal embossing relief using a heavy gauge metal foil and wooden tools to emboss their artistic work inspired by cropped patterns found in nature.

Ex Libris

Students carve a linoleum relief print using symbolism to create a personalized book stamp. "Ex Libris" from the library of...

Student Voice - This project gave me the opportunity to learn a new medium that provided a rewarding experience.

Student Voice - My favorite part of the assignment was printing because it was phenomenal to see the design I created finally in action and on paper.

Harmony

Students create artwork(s) that represent four components of one theme, unifying the components through use of style, media, composition, etc. Students choose media that best synthesizes and incorporates their subject matter.

Narrative

Students tell a story through visual arts using their choice of medium, subject matter and style. Students exercise their skills in figural and structural perspective drawings before approaching their narrative, so they may choose to incorporate techniques.

Student Voice - With freedom to choose what medium I wanted to use I explored a new medium and enjoyed using it.

Student Voice - I enjoyed that I could get more fantasy based with my visual story while still keeping it personal.

Identity

Students deep dive into a brainstorming activity about self, personality, ancestry, culture and more. With a mixed media approach students create a visual representation of their identity, full of symbolism. The mixed media approach allows students to choose what media best supports their multi layered artwork.

Anything but a Canvas

Students reflect on painted objects through history and cultural uses. After considering prompts and creating drafts, students are able to choose and bring in any object from home to paint  on. An array of examples are provided including jeans jackets,  skateboards, furniture and more.

Student Voice - Working on the identity project allowed me to spend time reflecting on myself.

Student Voice - I enjoyed the creative freedom. It felt fun to be able to paint on something you wouldn't normally paint, even a bit rebellious.
